VoltSafe Marine Powers Up Blue Economy's Battle with Climate Change

Tech

As the world seeks sustainable solutions to meet energy demands and tackle climate change, innovative technologies are critical. Ocean economies are beginning to recognize the effects of climate change. The ocean absorbs carbon from the atmosphere and excess heat from GHG emissions. So you can see why keeping the ocean waters clean is essential to survival. The Blue Economy is working to tackle emissions at the source by reducing GHG. They have discovered that electrification is key. But electrification would require electricity production beyond current supplies. This is why fostering the growth of marine renewables will lead to the supply to meet the demand. With electrification of the ocean, the ability to collect data to understand the effects of climate change on our earth and track it becomes easier. VoltSafe’s award winning marine shore power system, VoltSafe Marine is making significant strides to support marinas, ports and docks as they look to service electric vessels. VoltSafe’s technology can also help power equipment, vessels and vehicles at every step of the electrification process.

Clean Marine Transportation

The marine transportation sector is eager to transition to clean energy operation. Ferries, shipping  and fishing vessels and cruise ships traditionally run on diesel, producing several tonnes of GHG emissions. The change over to electric can be as easy as swapping out a diesel motor for an electric one

Recently, an environmental group found that Nova Scotia’s lobster fleet produces about 82 million kilograms of carbon emissions each year. This is equivalent to the emissions of about 35,000 cars. They determined that 2,300 lobster boats in that fleet are suitable candidates to  convert their vessels to electric by removing old non operational diesel motors for electric motors. This is a cost effective way to slash the industry’s emissions making an impact on climate change.

Nova Scotia’s commitment to protecting the environment brought VoltSafe to their shores to demonstrate VoltSafe Marine in front of global business leaders, service providers and government officials. The VoltSafe team was blown away by the beauty of the marine environment of Halifax and can see why the east coast is dedicated to maritime climate action. The company is happy to support the marine community there in their transition effort. But the transition to shore power will also require the resources to support it.

Energizing Marine Renewables

Marine renewables would help support the move to electrification for various sectors of the ocean economy. Marine renewables which include tidal wave, solar and wind power are harvested to produce power for electric vessels. These vessels would be used in the transportation, fishing, defense, marine biology, marine energy and data collection sectors. The current supply by land based utility companies is not enough to supply the vessels used by the marine economy. Marine renewables are a cost effective source of electricity.  Part of the marine renewable energy sector would also involve data collection. VoltSafe’s adaptable technology would help to power service operation vehicles and equipment used in offshore marine power operations to support the development, collection and delivery of marine energy to local communities.

Keeping Data Collection Current

Accurate and comprehensive data collection is essential for understanding and mitigating environmental impacts, particularly in marine environments. Autonomous vessels and drones  are used in the marine renewable energy sector, defense sector, fishing and the scientific field for data collection.

In marine settings, data collection devices often struggle with power supply issues due to the challenging environment. The salt in the air and water produce corrosion which traditional prongs hide. VoltSafe’s exposed contacts are easy to clean and reveal hidden corrosion. This reliability is vital for reducing electrical issues and malfunctions and delivering long-term environmental monitoring and research.

By ensuring a steady power supply and reliable connectivity, VoltSafe Marine will ensure that  these vessels and vehicles can operate independently for extended periods, gathering valuable data from remote and difficult-to-reach locations. This capability is particularly important for monitoring climate change impacts, marine biodiversity, fishing and other critical environmental parameters.

VoltSafe connectors ensure that data transmission is not compromised by environmental factors. This integrity is crucial for obtaining accurate and reliable data, which is necessary for making informed decisions about marine conservation and resource management such as marine renewables.

VoltSafe is at the forefront of transforming the marine renewables sector, transportation, and marine data collection. Through its patented technology and award winning shore power pedestal system, VoltSafe Marine enhances reliability, safety, and efficiency in power transmission and data collection. As the world continues to prioritize sustainability and environmental stewardship, VoltSafe’s technology will play a pivotal role in driving progress and shaping a cleaner, safer, and more connected future.
